"Best & Brightest" Side by Side Concert Success!

January 31st Civic Youth Orchestra's and San Diego Symphony's side by side concert at Copley Symphony Hall was a huge success! The combined orchestras played before a "sold-out" audience. Thank you to all the CYO families and friends that supported this event and contributed to its huge success. We give special thanks to the San Diego Symphony's Education Outreach Program and the director of the program, Ms. Adrienne Valencia.  Congratulations to the Symphony students who enjoyed the opportunity to perform with the San Diego Symphony, and to Valerie Kim, who was a featured performer with the San Diego Symphony.

Winter CYO Concert at Carlsbad High School

Congratulations to all of our awesome performers. CYO's Primary Strings Orchestra, Intermediate and Chamber Strings Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Orchestra all had great performances at the Carlsbad High School auditorium on Saturday, January 24th. The audience turnout was excellent and the concert itself went exceptionally well. We had a wonderful parent volunteer turnout due to a tremendous effort by Rachael Dabkowski; and thank you to all the parents behind the scenes and at the reception - everything was terrific!! These outstanding concerts would not be possible without the support of parents and family members.  Thank you!

I heard today that Bud Emile passed away last week.  I was a member of CYO 1970-73 and was a trombone soloist with them in  73.  He helped me get a full scholarship to Eastman...which helped launch my career.  I had friends in Nebraska who told me (one teaches his grandaughter). I was able to thank him a few years ago for everything he did.  I remember doing Shostakovich 5, Barber Essay #2 and Adagio for stgs (ok, I was a trombone player), Hansen 5...big stuff for high school kids in the late 70's. I've played Dvorak symphonies many, many times by now, but I can still remember the first time I played them with the Civic. He programmed me with Concertino D'Hiver for trombone and orchestra by Milhaud. Definitely progressive. I owe a lot to him...even though they were only three or four short years a lifetime ago.

It is with great sadness that I read in this morning's paper about the passing of Robert "Bud" Emile, the former CYO Conductor (1965-1975) who attended and conducted at our 50th Anniversary Gala.

He died on Friday in Lincoln, Nebraska. I am so glad I got the chance to chat with him at the Gala.

Dominique and Valerie Kim selected as winners of San Diego Symphony's 2008 Young Artist Competition (a.k.a. "Hot Shots")
Dominique and Valerie Kim are members of our Civic Youth Orchestra Symphony -- flute and violin, respectively, and at this competition the seven judges collectively awarded Valerie the honor of 1st prize for her piano concerto!

Among the finalists ranging in age from 10 to 18, Valerie was by far the youngest, yet she was able to rise to the occasion, and thrill the judges with her best performance of Bach Concerto in d minor. Dominique played her more majestic and impressive piano concerto (Saint-Saens' #2) almost as well, and garnered 3rd prize.

As part of winning prizes, they will be invited to perform as soloists with the San Diego Symphony in the upcoming season!!! Soon, their photos and bios will be featured on the San Diego Symphony's website.

Now Valerie is preparing for her upcoming solo performances with the San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra (May-4 in Escondido) and the New City Sinfonia (June-6 in San Diego).

For those of you who are local, we hope to see you at either or both of these events, as they will be good opportunities for you to see and hear other fine youths who are dedicated to classical music as well as Dominique and Valerie.

For more info on these and other future performance schedules, please go to --> www.youtube.com/jungkim2020 and see the "Event Dates" section.
