History of the Civic Youth Orchestra
1956: The San Diego Civic Youth Orchestra was founded in San Diego to create a symphony for the more advanced instrumentalists from all over San Diego County. It was affiliated with Mesa College, and then San Diego State University's Community Music School.
1961: A Training Orchestra was established and the organization grew into a series of "Stepping Stone" groups, including chamber and wind ensembles.
1986: A North Area ensemble was established, meeting for rehearsals at Palomar College that grew into three string orchestras. Later, a wind ensemble was added to the North Area.
2001 to 2006: An after-school strings education program was added at Gompers Secondary School and Our Lady's School in San Diego.
2002 to 2004: An East Area ensemble rehearsed and performed at Grossmont College.
2005: All ensembles were consolidated to the North Area at Palomar College and "San Diego" dropped from our name. We are now known as the Civic Youth Orchestra.
2008-09: Our last season at Palomar College.
2009 to 2010: Civic Youth Orchestra relocated to the San Marcos Senior Center.
2010: Our 54th Season and a new rehearsal site at North County Church of Christ.
